Paddle to Squaxin

The Squaxin Island Tribe ceded the entire south Puget Sound area to the United States government in the Treaty of Medicine Creek, the first in the Washington Territories. These ancestral lands reach from the Black Hills to the north and west, to Mt. Rainier to the east, south to Mt. St. Helens and back to the Black Hills.

In the summer of 2012, the tribe celebrated the resurgence of Coast Salish culture when it hosted the intertribal Canoe Journey, Paddle to Squaxin 2012.  An estimated 100+ canoes (each carrying a dozen or so paddlers) and approximately 30,000 total people attended the landing event in downtown Olympia near Swantown Marina.
